Way Off Topic: Woodturning

So, I've been away from blogging for a bit, wanna know why?  Of course you do.  Well, I've been woodworking as a hobby for several years but a few weeks ago I purchased a mini Jet Wood Lathe.  I've been turning killer bowls and also a few pens.  You can check out the wiki I created for the woodturner community as well as some photos of what I've done.  Enjoy.

Business Case to Ponder

Your customer uses your product but they didn't take your recommendations on proper equipment needed to use your product in their process, now they are having quality issues and yelling at you to fix it.  Your name is being drug in the mud and you did everything you could, do you pull the product to save the use of another you sell to this company or keep moving forward?

Seedwiki as Choice

All-in-all things are looking good in the new wiki area.  Seedwiki was easy to set-up and has enough features that even new people to wiki's are having good luck at using it.  The good thing is that everyone is excited about it but I don't see a ton of activity.  I take any chance I can to talk about it and how they might use the wiki.

Quick Corporate Memory Research Project Update

  • SeedWiki is now what we are using for our experimental corporate memory project.
  • SocialText proved to be not pleasing on the eye so people in the project asked me to switch to another like SeedWiki.
  • Confluence continued to be difficult to install by even our IT department.

Side note: OpenOffice, is a great program that I had evaluated earlier in the year.  If you don't have MS Office it's a great alternative with a few bugs that business users will hate, like no mail merge to Outlook contacts.  If you do have MS Office, I can't find the reason as to why make the switch.

Googlism, Microsoftism; Company Culture and Philosophy

Each company on this planet has a culture, an 'ism' that becomes the road map and voice of those who would guide the company.  Scott Berkun posted an interesting topic on his blog that made me think more on culture; "Google’s 10 rules compared to Microsoft".

YahooGroups, Groove Or Socialtext Wiki: My Personal Impressions - Robin Good' Sharewood Tidings

Time is one of those odd things, we can't get rid of it, we need it but we don't have enough of it.  I'm back, sorry for the absense, I'm not sure where my allocation of time went through the holidays.  My Corporate Memory project is still in full swing and I came across this interesting article comparing a few choices for wikis.  Enjoy!

The Wiki Saga

Ok, not a Saga but an journey with head-banging.  If you recall from past posts I've been researching how to use common tools today that may help a companies "Corporate Memory Recall".

Old Exposed Film, Never Seen By Photographer

I was just going through my feeds when I saw this one from Boing Boing.  It's about this guy who prints the photos from old found cameras or exposed film that the photographer would most likely have not seen. Some are found at pawn shops and some he gets from people who find the exposed rolls of film.  It's kinda cool to see something the creater wouldn't have seen.  What's a kick in the pants is this guys commentary about the photos, kinda what my cousins and I do at Christmas when we have to watch the old slides yet again.
