OpenOffice....It's Free?...But Does It Work??

I had a friend ask me the other day, "Kris, how did you get so knowledgeable about all this computer stuff?" and the answer is I must have ADD (no disrespect to those affected) but mostly I just like to play with things.

My new toy, not to replace my research on "Corporate Memory" or "How do I get this wiki thing as an intranet for my company"; is OpenOffice.

Back on the Personal Wiki Bus

If I am anything I am a stick to it person...a personal wiki has to help productivity so here is what I am trying and I will post how it works.

So, I tried the personal wiki I talked about.....didn't work.....I'm not enough of a geek so I'll wait until I have to pay too much for the easy to use commercial version. :)

Semapedia - The Physical Wikipedia

Here I am amazed again about what we are creating on the internet with tools from others, the ultimate collaboration for products.  We know I love Wikipedia, travel, my smartphones and the merging of technology.  Well, Semapedia has to be the coolest thing since Google Maps. 

Here is how it would go down.  I'd be walking in the center of Codoba, Spain and come across a strange barcode on a recent dig of a Roman ruin.  I use my handy smartphone to snap a photo and send it to a program in the phone that will link the bar code with the entry for Cordoba in  Wikipedia.

It's a travel guide in my phone on demand!

Wiki's for Project Management

Since I first discovered Wikipedia I've been facinated by the concept of a community website that can be updated and changed by anyone or a set of allowed collaborators.  To read about what a Wiki is. (hint, click the link "wiki".)

What amazes me is that I've seen this before and didn't realize it; when our company set-up our website to be content changed by us and not the web designers, the way to write the text was in the same way as doing a Wiki.

Ok, so here is the issue: I want to use a wiki internally in our company as a place for people to collaborate on projects. 

Barriers to doing so:

• Computer knowledge of all collaborators (I'm the only one savy enough to know how to edit the pages).
• Editing (WYSIWYG) is getting better but still a bit technical for the less than average to average user
• One lead person must still moderate the Wiki so that the page is moving in a direction.  Meaning one person must make sure the calendar is filled out or documents are uploaded...blah blah blah.

What I want:

• Collaborative site
• All team members can log on and update/make changes/get information
• Document control center
• Intuitive site where a person naturally follows project management principles (I guess if this was available we wouldn't have degrees devoted to Project Managers huh?)

Just some thoughts but if anyone else is working on this please let me know.
